Divorce & Remarriage
This week we looked at a painful topic: Divorce. The Bible is clear on God’s stance toward divorce – He hates it (Malachi 2:16). The Bible is also clear that God understands the pain that comes with it (Jeremiah 3) and that there is nothing that the blood of Jesus can’t redeem. All too often in the Church we find ourselves in one of two extreme views of God’s Word: 1) we take it too lightly and abuse the grace of Jesus or 2) we see ourselves too highly in our mastery of it and become self-righteous. Both of those extremes leave us misunderstanding God’s desire for marriage – that it be a mirror of His relationship with the Church. That’s why divorce pains Him so much. Unfortunately the Church tends to also view those who have experienced the pain of divorce as though they are second-class citizens in the Kingdom. There are no second-class citizens. There are only citizens who have been saved by grace and non-citizens who have not yet believed in the powerful name of Jesus. For all, there are numerous reasons to repent – either of self-righteousness or of abusing the grace of Jesus.
We recognize that this is a difficult topic as many folks have been impacted by divorce. If you would like to begin a conversation about divorce, remarriage or following Jesus, we would love to hear from you. If you have questions, please feel free to ask them here.
