After completing and dedicating the wall and the city, Nehemiah returned to Susa to report back to Artaxerxes. He was there for approximately 2 years. When he returned to Jerusalem again, the people had fallen away from their previous zeal for following God’s laws. It only took a short time for the people of Jerusalem to move past their vows and dedication back into similar sin habits: working on the Sabbath, not tithing, and marrying people from the surrounding (non-believing) towns – they had stopped being disciplined and slowly had allowed sin to infiltrate. When Nehemiah returned, he was furious. His response can teach us a lot about what our response to sin should be. What do you need to purify out of your life? What discipline do you need to bring into your life to help you?
