Rooted: Week 1
We began our study of 2 Peter this week. We want to be a people that is deeply rooted in our faith so that we can grow in spiritual maturity but so that we can also be “productive and useful” (2 Peter 1:8) in our faith. As Peter’s life exemplifies, this transition from being short-sighted and cowardly to having an eternal perspective that is filled with courage, Peter’s words ring with even more weight. In the Gospels we see Simon, son of John – who makes bold declarations and brash decisions that have no depth. In this letter to the Church, we see Peter – who has experienced the depths of despair by denying Jesus before the crucifixion and then been deeply restored by Jesus. Simon became Peter because he was restored by Jesus and empowered by the Holy Spirit. We should follow his example.
