Sacred: Week 4
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” – Exodus 20:7
This week we looked at the Third Commandment. God says that His name is sacred. Middle School Pastor, Darvaris Peterson, walked us through how from the “abundance of the heart, our mouth speaks,” (Luke 6:45) and causes us to unwittingly take the Lord’s name in vain. He gave us three ways we can do this:
1. We can use God’s name with no value in it. This happens when we use it carelessly and without thought for His character, power or presence in and over our lives.
2. We can use God’s name for our own leverage. This happens when we want to stamp His approval on our actions or when we want to take advantage of a situation.
3. We can use God’s name when claiming to be a Christian without displaying “fruit”. This is a scary thought to consider. In Matthew 7, Jesus makes it clear that there will be those who claim to have relationship with Him and yet who will be dismissed from the Kingdom. As Darvaris so eloquently put it, there is “always a lack of respect when there is lack of relationship.”
So how about you? Do you have a relationship with Jesus? Where are you guilty of using His name in vain that you need to repent? We’d love to help connect you to Jesus and to His people. You can reach out to us via email and let’s start a conversation.
