Sacred: Week 6
“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” – Exodus 20:12
As we continued our series this week, John Reeves took us through the Fifth Commandment. As we are reminded in the New Testament, this is the first commandment that comes with a promise. So, what would our society look like if we actually obeyed this commandment? How would our town be different if the people of RADIUS Church lived out this commandment?
There are two parts to better understanding this commandment. First, those of us who are parents need to be honorable and strive to breed a healthy culture of honor within our homes. This will not ever happen perfectly, but with the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, those of us who follow Jesus have a built-in Helper in our pursuit of honor. Secondly, we must understand that, after childhood, the word honor is NOT synonymous with obedience. Our ability to release our children into the world is an important step in living honorably.
While we understand that many folks come from dysfunctional family circumstances, the beauty of the Gospel is that Jesus is able to help us move toward forgiveness which opens up opportunities for health and spiritual growth. Forgiveness doesn’t necessarily look like total reconciliation, but it is an important first step in living out this commandment. We’d love to help you discover what your path to forgiveness looks like. You can reach out to us by email and let’ start a conversation.
